Visit Plaka & the Castle of Milos – A Journey Through Time

At the heart of Milos lies Plaka, the island’s charming capital — a traditional Cycladic village built high above the sea with breathtaking views and timeless character. In the 18th century, due to outbreaks of disease in the island’s original capital, Zephyria, residents gradually abandoned it and relocated to the hilltop settlement of Kastro (the Castle), which soon became the new capital. As more people arrived and space became limited, neighboring villages like Plaka, Triovasalos, Trypiti, and Plakes began to grow.

Plaka remains the soul of Milos. With its narrow cobbled alleys, whitewashed houses, and flowered balconies, it feels like stepping into another era. These winding paths were designed not only for beauty, but for protection — built at a time when pirate attacks across the Aegean were a constant threat. Today, they offer visitors a peaceful escape and unforgettable views. Don’t miss “Marmara,” the famous viewpoint of Plaka, where the sunset casts golden hues over the sea and islands beyond.

Rising above Plaka at 280 meters, the Castle of Milos (Kastro) is the island’s historic sentinel. This steep hill once served as a powerful Venetian fortress. In the 13th century, the Venetian Sanudo family, rulers of the Cyclades and the Aegean, settled here and fortified the castle to defend against pirate raids.

Climbing to the top rewards you with panoramic views of the bay, white villages, and blue horizon — a moment of true serenity that connects past and present. The chapel of Panagia Thalassitra, perched near the summit, adds a spiritual beauty to the scene.

Whether you’re a history lover, a sunset seeker, or simply in search of quiet wonder, Plaka and Kastro promise an unforgettable experience.
